The DBF qualification is the intermediate stage in the professional pathway and provides the foundation for a career in banking and finance focusing on the operational environment, basic characteristics, concepts, theoretical background, and basic managerial aspects related to the Banking and Financial services sector. It is a complete revision of the existing curriculum to meet the requirements of human resources with knowledge and skills in the Banking and Financial services industry to work efficiently and effectively to meet the challenges of current and emerging changes in the industry in a digitalized environment. Accordingly, the revision process focused on addressing not only current developments but also future challenges in this highly dynamic service industry.

Minimum entry qualifications for new student registrations are as follows:

  • Certificate in Banking & Finance (CBF) - IBSL 
  • GCE (A/L) in Sri Lanka in any stream having three (03) simple passes in one sitting; or equivalent foreign examination; OR,
  • Degree from a recognized university in Sri Lanka / Foreign Degree approved by the University Grants Commission (UGC); OR,
  • Professional qualification from a recognized professional institute in Sri Lanka or abroad; OR,
  • Part qualification of a professional/academic institute in Sri Lanka or abroad subject to the condition that the level should be equivalent to Level 2 of the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) / NVQ 4 of National Vocational Qualification Levels of Sri Lanka, subject to the approval of the Institute
  • Mature Entry: Those employed in the banking/finance industry and over 18 years of age with a minimum of eight (08) years of experience proved by a recommendation letter from the employer are considered for registration under this category subject to the approval of the Institute; OR,

Fees and Payment Plans

  • Registration Fee: Rs. 2,000
  • Diploma Level Per subject : 12500

Note: Additionally, you are required to pay the IBSL Sri Lanka registration fee, exam fees.

Assessments and Evaluation

Students are required to do a mid-semester exam and face the final exam at the end of the semester.

The final grade will be computed as follows:

  • Mid-term Exam          40%
  • Final exam                  60%
  • Total                            100%

Students are required to obtain a minimum of 50% from the mid-semester examination and 50% from the final semester examination to pass the subject.

Examination Details

  • Two examinations cycles are conducted for DBF, HDBF, IABF, and DABF in March and September under normal circumstances. These time periods are subject to change under unavoidable circumstances.
  • Examinations are conducted in all three mediums of English, Sinhala, and Tamil

What is the Diploma in Banking & Finance (DBF)?

The DBF is an intermediate qualification in the professional pathway for individuals aiming to excel in banking and financial services. It provides knowledge on operational environments, theoretical concepts, and managerial aspects relevant to the industry.

To register for the DBF program, you must meet one of the following criteria:

  • Certificate in Banking & Finance (CBF) from IBSL.
  • GCE (A/L) in any stream with three (03) simple passes in one sitting or an equivalent foreign qualification.
  • A degree from a recognized university (local or foreign, approved by UGC).
  • Professional or part qualifications equivalent to Level 2 of the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) / NVQ 4.
  • Mature entry for those employed in banking/finance with over eight (08) years of experience, verified by a recommendation letter from the employer (subject to IBSL approval).

The DBF program can be completed in 1 year, divided into two semesters.

Assessments include:

  • Mid-term Exam: 40% of the total grade.
  • Final Exam: 60% of the total grade.
    Students must achieve at least 50% in both assessments to pass.

The program is available in Sinhala and English.
